Sun International has appointed Ulrik Bengtsson as its new Group Chief Executive Officer. He is expected to assume the role on July 1, subject to the issuance of a work permit. His appointment signals a strategic shift for the company, as it strengthens its focus on digital operations and omnichannel expansion.

End of an era for outgoing CEO

Bengtsson replaces Anthony Leeming, who is stepping down after 26 years with the group. Leeming served as CEO since 2017 and will officially leave the role on July 1. He will stay on until December 2025 to help ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Chairman Sam Sithole thanked Leeming for his long service:

“Anthony has left an indelible mark on Sun International and the remainder of the group, and I would like to thank him for his significant contribution and dedication to the business over the last 26 years, and especially for his exemplary stewardship of the group since 2017.”

Global experience at the helm

Bengtsson, a Swedish national, brings nearly 20 years of leadership experience in gaming, betting, telecom, and broadcasting. He led Betsson Group from 2013 to 2017, and then William Hill between 2018 and 2021.

He currently chairs Raketech, Hostelworld, and Gamenation (UK). Bengtsson has announced he will leave these roles and relocate to South Africa. Last week, he confirmed his resignation from Raketech after accepting the new full-time role.

Driving digital transformation

Sun International has expanded its digital operations under Leeming. Once a land-based casino and resort operator, it now offers a mix of online betting, limited payout machines, and hospitality services.

The board sees Bengtsson as the right fit to continue this strategy.

“Ulrik is a highly experienced and accomplished global executive with deep industry knowledge and expertise. His proven track record of delivering results and unlocking value in complex, dynamic environments position him extremely well to lead Sun International into its next phase of growth.”

Bengtsson also shared his vision:

“Sun International is an iconic leisure group with a proud heritage. It has a unique growth opportunity to become a leading omnichannel player in the rapidly evolving global gaming landscape. I am thrilled to bring my experience and expertise to this fantastic organisation as chief executive and look forward to working with the board and other stakeholders to drive its continued success and chart a bold path forward into the future.”
