Uganda Seizes Over 6,000 Illegal Gaming Machines in Nationwide Crackdown
Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board has seized more than 6,000 illegal gaming machines nationwide through Operation “Mashine Haramu.” Meanwhile, the enforcement campaign intensified with the confiscation of over 80 unlicensed machines in Mbarara and Ibanda on October 14.

Enforcement Campaign Protects Regulated Gaming Sector
Steven Tabaruka, NLGRB Operations Manager, stated that “the Board’s goal is to protect Ugandans by eliminating illegal gaming activities and promoting responsible gaming.” Therefore, the initiative safeguards Uganda’s regulated gaming ecosystem while supporting compliant operators. Moreover, Tabaruka encouraged operators to visit NLGRB offices in Mbarara or Kampala to regularize operations. Consequently, industry stakeholders have praised the regulator’s regional engagement approach.
The Board continues stakeholder meetings in northern districts addressing underage gambling and compliance awareness. Subsequently, these initiatives strengthen adherence to licensing regulations and protect consumers. Additionally, the regulator monitors operators’ systems and equipment for compliance with safety standards. Therefore, enforcement aligns the sector with international best practices and anti-money laundering requirements.
License Renewal Process Opens for 2026 Operations
The Board is accepting applications for 2026 license renewals from October 3 through October 31. Meanwhile, operators introducing new games or casinos face careful review processes. Moreover, applicants must submit game rules and anti-money laundering compliance reports. Furthermore, electronic gaming machines require mandatory connection to the National Central Electronic Monitoring System.
Licensed premises must meet strict standards for security, accessibility, and responsible gaming operations. Therefore, the NLGRB pledges ongoing collaboration with local authorities and police to maintain industry standards. Consequently, the regulator encourages all stakeholders to support a safe and regulated gaming environment benefiting operators, players, and communities.
