SportPesa Renews Sponsorship to Power Shujaa’s World Rugby Sevens Charge
Kenya’s national rugby sevens team, Shujaa, is set for a big comeback to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series thanks to a new sponsorship deal with sports betting firm SportPesa. The partnership brings in significant funding to support rugby in Kenya.
SportPesa to Pump in Ksh84.15m to Back Shujaa
SportPesa has committed Ksh84.15m to the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) under the new deal. The deal spans 2024 – 2025 and 2025 – 2026 seasons with Sh33 million for the first year and Sh49 million for the second year. There’s also Sh1.65 million in prize money for the 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit to support local rugby initiatives.
SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri said during the sponsorship launch: „This partnership aligns with SportPesa’s broader mission to nurture and promote sports excellence across the country. Aside from the financial support our objective is to empower our athletes to achieve greatness while inspiring the next generation of sports stars.”
The funds will help Shujaa prepare for the World Rugby Sevens Series and also grassroots rugby development.
As Kenya returns to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, this sponsorship gives the team a chance to rebuild. The extra funding comes at the right time for Shujaa to focus on player development, coaching and international travel logistics.
The SportPesa-KRU partnership also supports the overall push to grow Kenyan rugby globally.
A Step Forward for Kenyan Sports
This is another big tick for SportPesa as a sports supporter in Kenya. By investing in rugby, the company is again backing Kenya’s sports development.
As Shujaa returns to the World Rugby Sevens Series, this partnership means we’ll see Kenya’s rugby stars shine on the world stage with local backing and global dreams.
