Africa’s largest digital payments network Onafriq has established a strategic alliance with Visa to introduce the Visa Pay platform across the Democratic Republic of Congo. Consequently, the cloud-native Payments-as-a-Service system connects mobile money wallets directly to Visa’s global card network, enabling seamless e-commerce and digital payment access for consumers throughout the country.

Mobile Money Integration Drives Market Expansion

The partnership specifically integrates M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and Orange Money wallets through Onafriq’s API infrastructure. Furthermore, consumers can fund their Visa Pay wallets directly from existing mobile money accounts. Visa DRC General Manager Sophie Kafuti stated that “our collaboration with Onafriq represents our ambition to accelerate financial inclusion in the DRC. By connecting Visa Pay to existing mobile money infrastructure, we’re not just adding convenience—we’re creating the interoperability foundation that will fuel digital commerce adoption across the country.”

Meanwhile, GSMA data projects the DRC’s mobile payments industry will reach $3.85 billion in transaction value this year. Additionally, this represents a 19% compound annual growth rate across retail payments, e-commerce, government services, and business collections nationwide.

Strategic Foundation for Continental Digital Commerce Growth

The collaboration leverages Visa’s international network capabilities alongside Onafriq’s established African market presence. Moreover, Onafriq Chief Commercial Officer Christian Bwakira noted that “Onafriq has connected Congolese consumers to Africa and the world for years, operating as the trusted infrastructure in the background. This partnership demonstrates how combining Visa’s global network reach with Onafriq’s deep on-ground presence creates unprecedented possibilities for innovation and financial inclusion across Africa.”

Subsequently, the partnership establishes a framework for Visa Pay expansion into additional African markets. Therefore, the platform addresses growing demand for interoperable digital payment solutions across regions where mobile money adoption continues accelerating rapidly.
