Morocco will officially establish an Arab-African center of excellence in artificial intelligence and data science during the 80th United Nations General Assembly, aiming to promote inclusive digital transformation across regional markets.

UN Partnership Supports Digital Development Initiative

The Morocco Digital for Sustainable Development hub receives backing from the UN Development Program following a July memorandum of understanding signed during the National AI Forum. The partnership targets improvements in digital public services, responsible AI implementation, and institutional frameworks supporting digital transformation and sustainable development across Arab states and African regions.

UNDP recognizes Morocco’s digital governance leadership, with the country ranking 90th globally and 4th in Africa on the 2024 UN E-Government Development Index. Morocco scored 0.6841 out of 1, exceeding both African and global averages. The country launched its “Digital Morocco 2030” strategy in September 2023 to accelerate socio-economic development through digital innovation.

Regional Digital Barriers Drive Center Creation

The initiative addresses uneven digital benefit distribution across Africa, where countries face systematic obstacles including inadequate infrastructure and limited AI capacity. UNDP identifies low investment in digital innovation and uncoordinated regulatory frameworks as additional challenges requiring regional cooperation and expertise sharing.

The excellence center represents Morocco’s commitment to regional digital leadership while addressing capacity gaps that prevent effective technology adoption across Arab and African markets. The facility will provide technical expertise and coordination support for countries seeking to strengthen their digital transformation capabilities and regulatory systems.
