A hiring controversy has emerged in Nairobi County amid claims of irregular recruitment within the Betting Control and Licensing Department. Reports suggest that politically connected individuals were appointed to key positions without a transparent selection process, bypassing qualified candidates.

Allegations of Irregular Staff Recruitment

Bungoma Senator David Wakoli has voiced his concerns, alleging that positions within the regulatory department were filled without a transparent hiring process. He claims that top county officials played a role in handpicking candidates, bypassing established recruitment protocols. The senator criticized the Nairobi County government for failing to uphold merit-based employment standards.

Senator Wakoli’s Inquiry into Hiring Practices

In response to these allegations, Senator Wakoli has formally requested a statement from the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare regarding recruitment, promotion, and staff development within the Board. He has also demanded a detailed breakdown of the Board’s staff by position.

Additionally, the senator has called for a complete list of senior management members, along with their academic qualifications and professional experience. He aims to assess the leadership overseeing the regulatory body.

Transparency in Recruitment Under Scrutiny

Wakoli is also seeking clarification on the most recent hiring and promotion processes, including whether job vacancies were advertised internally, externally, or both. He has urged the county government to disclose the selection criteria used for various positions within the betting control and licensing department.

The senator is particularly interested in whether participation in training and capacity-building programs influenced promotion decisions. Furthermore, he has requested a full list of officers who previously served under the defunct board and later transitioned to the current entity.
