Ghana Football Association Partners Police to Combat Illegal Betting Before New Season
The Ghana Football Association has formed a strategic partnership with the Criminal Investigations Department to eliminate illegal betting operations and protect licensed gambling activities before the 2025/26 Premier League season begins on September 12. The collaboration addresses mounting concerns over unlicensed betting practices that threaten fair play and competition integrity across Ghanaian football.

Targeting Match Manipulation and Violence
GFA President Kurt Simeon-Okraku met with CID Director-General Lydia Donkor at Police Headquarters on August 25 to establish enforcement priorities. The partnership focuses on three primary challenges: illegal betting operations, match manipulation schemes, and stadium hooliganism. Both organizations emphasized their commitment to creating a transparent environment for players, officials, and supporters.
The initiative represents part of the GFA’s broader stakeholder engagement strategy as the new season approaches. Donkor acknowledged football’s cultural importance, stating that authorities consider the sport a national treasure and avenue for unity, development, and national pride. The police service will maintain ongoing support for addressing corruption in sports, venue violence, and unlicensed betting practices.
Protecting Licensed Operations While Eliminating Threats
The crackdown specifically targets unlicensed betting operations while preserving legitimate gambling businesses that contribute to sports financing. Authorities recognize regulated betting as a legitimate industry supporting football development. However, illegal operations continue to pose significant risks to competitive fairness and league credibility.
Licensed betting operators can expect enhanced protection under the new enforcement framework. The partnership aims to create a professionally managed competition where integrity and fair play remain paramount. Fans and stakeholders will benefit from increased security measures designed to eliminate corruption and maintain competitive balance throughout the upcoming season.
