Corporate Social Responsibility in Kenya’s iGaming Sector

Dr. Jane Makau, Chairperson of the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), highlighted the crucial role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the gaming industry during an interview at the Gaming Tech Summit Africa 2024. She emphasized that CSR initiatives are essential for ensuring that the benefits of the gaming sector extend beyond profits and contribute positively to society.

Enhancing Community Relations

Dr. Makau praised the efforts of the BCLB to ensure that gaming companies in Kenya give back to the community. She stated in the interview for igamingafrika, “The Kenyan society can relate with the betting companies that they are not just doing business in Kenya but also giving back to society.”

Economic Contributions through Taxation

Highlighting the economic impact, Dr. Makau noted a significant increase in tax revenues from the gaming sector. The tax payments from betting companies have risen from KES 18 billion last year to KES 24 billion this year, with a target of KES 30 billion for the next financial year.

Recognition of BCLB’s Achievements

Mr. Innocent Muganda, a BCLB board member, commended the board’s achievements in various areas, including punter protection, revenue collection, and tax compliance.

He particularly acknowledged Dr. Makau’s efforts in promoting CSR activities that benefit the community, ensuring that the gaming industry operates responsibly.

CSR Initiatives by Betting Companies

Several Kenyan betting companies, such as Shabiki.com and betPawa, have implemented noteworthy CSR initiatives. These initiatives include the provision of water tanks, school rehabilitation projects, and the payment of school fees for students in over 32 counties, with plans to expand to all 47 counties.

These efforts demonstrate a commitment to improving the living conditions and educational opportunities for many Kenyans.

BCLB’s Regulatory Role

Mr. Fredrick Mbasi, Deputy Director of the BCLB, reiterated the board’s commitment to regulating the gambling sector effectively. He highlighted their focus on player protection, responsible marketing, and the efficient collection of taxes. “We have done a lot in player protection, responsible marketing, and streamlining of payment of taxes,” Mbasi stated.
