Botswana’s gambling regulator hosted Tanzania’s Gaming Board for a working session on last week, focusing on digital record-keeping systems and cross-border licensing standards. The one-day visit centered on practical regulatory tools rather than broad policy frameworks, with particular attention to Botswana’s Electronic Document Management System.

Digital Systems Take Center Stage

The Electronic Document Management System emerged as the primary discussion point during the visit. The platform handles licensing approvals, audit trails and regulatory records without paper documentation. Both agencies examined how such systems reduce processing delays and minimize errors in routine tasks like licence renewals.

Director General James Bakinege Mbalwe led the Tanzanian group through technical demonstrations of the EDMS platform. He noted specific applications relevant to Tanzania’s regulatory environment. “This visit has shown us concrete ways to build stronger oversight in our own operations. Botswana’s progress in digital tools like EDMS gives us clear ideas to adapt back home,” Mbalwe stated.

Regional Coordination Continues

Kemorwale, who assumed the acting CEO position in August, highlighted mutual learning opportunities from the exchange. “We learn as much from our guests as we share. Tanzania’s experiences with diverse gaming formats will help us refine our monitoring of cross-border activities,” he said.

The meeting produced follow-up commitments, including webinars on EDMS implementation and shared audit checklist templates. Staff from both regulators identified common operational challenges, from remote betting verification to inspector training programs.
