20.03.2024

In a groundbreaking move for East and Central African sports, betPawa has proudly announced its sponsorship of Uganda’s National Basketball teams.

The company has committed a substantial sum of UGX 2.6 Billion to support the Silverbacks and Gazelles over the next three years. This collaboration with the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) marks a significant milestone in the region’s sports industry, setting new standards for private sector involvement in sports.

Transformative Partnership for Ugandan Basketball

Under this partnership, betPawa will cover essential costs such as team training, travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and supplements. This comprehensive support package is designed to ensure that the teams are well-prepared and equipped to compete at the highest levels.

One of the most innovative aspects of this sponsorship is the Locker Room Bonus initiative. Through this program, players will receive UGX 150,000 for each victory, directly rewarding their hard work and achievements on the court. This initiative not only boosts morale but also acknowledges the players’ dedication and performance.

A Milestone for East and Central African Sports

FUBA CEO Marcus Kwikiriza highlighted the significance of this sponsorship, noting that it is the first time players in the region will receive such a direct incentive. “This is the first time our players are getting an incentive such as the Locker Room Bonus and also the first time in East and Central Africa that a private company is sponsoring a national basketball team.”

The Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, commended betPawa for their involvement, emphasizing the crucial role of private sponsors in the development of sports. “Clap for this special occasion. The problems facing sports can only be solved by the partners we have here. Elsewhere private sponsors play a big role to support teams. Thanks to betPawa for bringing the challenge here.”

Preparing for Continental Dominance

The national team manager, Albert Ahabwe, expressed optimism about the future of Ugandan basketball, noting that financial challenges had hindered the teams’ progress in the past. “With betPawa on board we are ready to prepare, and when we prepare well and in good time, we are ready to take over the continent.”

betPawa’s Chief Commercial Officer, Ntoudi Mouyelo, pointed out the global attention the Basketball Africa League has brought to the sport. “With Uganda Silverbacks recently being ranked by FIBA as one of the most improved countries by ranking, moving up four spaces to position 83, out of 160; we see huge potential here. These kinds of partnerships can help them aspire to reach even greater achievements both regionally and globally.”
