Beitbridge Authorities Tackle Illegal Gambling

07.01.2025

Authorities in Beitbridge District, Zimbabwe have intensified efforts to curb illegal gambling activities by targeting unlicensed gaming devices in both rural and urban areas. The ongoing operation aims to restore order and protect vulnerable groups, particularly minors, from the harmful effects of gambling.

Crackdown on Unlicensed Gaming Devices

The crackdown, led by the Lotteries and Gaming Board in collaboration with local police, began on December 31. It focuses on unlicensed gambling devices that have proliferated in the border town and its surrounding areas. These devices, often found in business centers, have drawn widespread concern from residents, particularly due to their accessibility to minors under the age of 18.

Authorities have already confiscated 75 illegal gaming devices and arrested 16 individuals involved in these unauthorized activities. The operation reflects a robust commitment to enforcing gaming regulations and ensuring that only licensed gambling activities are permitted within the district.

Protecting Vulnerable Groups

The initiative comes in response to complaints from local communities about the negative impact of gambling, particularly on children. By targeting unlicensed operators, authorities aim to safeguard the well-being of vulnerable populations and promote compliance with the law.

The campaign is set to continue indefinitely, signaling a strong stance against illegal gaming operations. Authorities emphasize their determination to maintain order in Beitbridge and prevent the spread of unregulated gambling, which poses risks to both social and economic stability.
