NPP Plans to Abolish 10% Betting VAT Under Dr. Bawumia’s Leadership

George Krobea Asante, a Deputy National Communications Director for Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced that should Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lead the next government, the 10% Value-Added Tax (VAT) on betting would be abolished.

Youth Protests Against Betting Tax

The 10% tax on betting, games, and lottery winnings, introduced by the Ghana Revenue Authority in 2023, has been a point of contention, particularly among the youth. Many have voiced concerns that in a landscape with limited job opportunities, betting has become a significant source of income. The imposition of this tax, they argue, exacerbates their financial challenges.

Mr. Krobea Asante emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, is dedicated to reducing the financial burdens on Ghanaians by eliminating various taxes, including those on betting, electricity, and spare parts. These measures, according to Asante, are intended to improve the standard of living for many citizens.

A Call for Support in the Upcoming Elections

Asante also called on Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming elections, citing his experience in economic management and his clear vision for the future of the country. He contrasted this with the previous administration under former President John Mahama, which he claimed did not effectively address the nation’s economic challenges.

In his view, Dr. Bawumia represents the best hope for driving economic growth and enhancing the lives of Ghanaians.
